THE MIDDLE
ATLANTIC SYMPOSIUM ON THE HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS
OCTOBER 12 – 14,
2006
The topic of the seminar will be
Gauss and “Disquisitiones Arithmeticae”
The symposium is open to all interested individuals and
will run in the following way:
- Each participant is expected to read through Book 4 of
“Disquistiones,” either in Latin or in its English translation with the same
title. (One translation, by Arthur A. Clarke is a Yale book and available
from Amazon.)
- There will be, during the course of the symposium, six
presentations on the life and/or work of Gauss. If you are interested in
making such a presentation, please let the organizers know.
- Thursday evening, October 12, there will be a regular
meeting of the Philadelphia Area Seminar on the History of Mathematics, with
a presentation related to Gauss and his work.
- The sessions Friday morning and afternoon and Saturday
morning will be devoted to the presentation and discussion; the session
Saturday afternoon will be devoted to a discussion of the continuation in
following years of the symposium.
- There will be a registration fee charged to cover the
cost of continental breakfast, lunch, and coffee on Friday and Saturday.
The symposium will be held at Villanova University.
